PHILEMON IV

A/1 is situated in a corden around cave complex GR 133 206 after successfully clearing it out and deeming no chemical agents are in the area.

1x CSMR member is present attached to Plt Tac.

My C/S moved through the PLs as per orders encountering sporadic firefights with the enemy in keyhole positions, they also brought down IDF with spotters believed to be on a ridge to our S/ SE, first at GR 138 205 and then at another ridge GR 142 202. 4/1 have cleared this area on our East.

The Plt leaguer position came under IDF and at this time a few of the vehicles will need either repairing or replacing. We still have enough vics to be effective as a C/S though.

Expected Actions: My C/S with attachments will BIP cave complex as per orders, re-group on Plt leaguer pos and then head off N/ NW and link up and tie in with A/2 as fighting has been slightly heavier in their ops box.

Orders for this will follow.

1) Patrol composition and Location

8xpacs

2) Leaguer Status

ARD set up around cave system, 1/2 setup on the WEST side.

3) Patrol Report;

Upon passing the LOD 1/2 moved uncontested to PL GREEN.

Upon passing PL GREEN we took fire from our front from 2x enemy infantry approximately 100m away. Situated behind a rock feature. Initially, not being able to locate the enemy, we withdraw 50m to a defilade and began to locate the enemy. This we did after which the enemy was quickly destroyed. A fair amount of ammunition was expended during this movement and 1xT3 casualty taken.

We then continued up through PL YELLOW uncontested.

Upon passing PL YELLOW we took a contact from 2x enemy infantry hiding behind a rock feature on PL RED. I returned fire with my Delta and took Charlie on a left flanking assault. We assaulted the position with grenades destroying both enemy. During the re-org we sustained 2 casualties from a stray RPG, 1xP1 and 1xP4. These were latter extracted by the reserve section. We set position up on the previously enemy position and held it whilst the casualties were dealt with and other sections caught up. During this time fire was briefly exchanged with enemy forces occupying the southern ridge feature who were engaging 1/4. The outcome of this contact is unbeknown.

After some time on this position we were tasked with conducting a reconnaissance mission of the northern side of the cave entrance. We pushed forward beyond friendly lines approximately 50m when we were ambushed danger close with grenades. We returned grenades and withdrew suffering 2xP2 and 1xP3 casualty. Upon withdrawing we came under mortar attack causing a further P2 casulaty. We withdrew to our previous location now combat ineffective to await CASEVAC. Casualties were withdrawn leaving the section at a total strength of 4.

The section was now tasked with holding the centre of the platoon line during the assault towards the cave system. This was done in good order and without contact.

After a failed attempt to dislodge enemy in the cave. 1/2 were sent in. This scenario proved tricky resulting in the remainder of the section becoming P4 casualties.

Once all reinserted 1/2 took position to the west of the cave in platoon ARD looking WEST.

SUBJECT: Operation PHILEMON V 012000ZNOV17

1) Patrol composition and Location - including VRN of any vehicles;

8 x PAX

JK16AA - Vehicle 1

JK15AA - Vehicle 2

2) Leaguer Status - ideally with a visual;

1/3 is currently set up NW of the A/2 Leaguer cover between N and W.

3) Patrol Report;

Assisted in  removing and cleaning all bodies from initial cave system POS. Sent off 2 x P3's with the airlift which also collected all bodies.

Moved to the PLTN Leaguer POS and reclaimed our vehicles. Proceeded to to move through the RV's. Nothing significant to report. Came across 1 x Yellow truck but we let it past as there was no clear threat or orders to stop the vehicle.

We did various stops and movement covers along the RV's but nothing of significance happened during these movements.

Once we reached the designated A/1 FUP we move to the north west towards the location assigned to us that needed to be scouted. At this point in time we took contact from various locations from PAX with small arms and RPGs. We were engaged from the W and NW by numerous PAX and we took sporadic fire from the north. Suspected RPGS and mortars fell on our ridgeline so we pull back into cover.

At this point in time we were ordered to move back to the ERV which was RV 7. We heard reports of other sections losing vehicles so we first look around and see who we could assist before moving off to RV 7. We dropped off the soldiers from the other sections on the Leaguer POS first before moving to our own on the NW side of the Leaguer to set up.

Currently set up on the NW side cover N through W

AFTER ACTION REPORT
FROM: COUPE, CPL, 3 SEC 1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN
SUBJECT: Operation PHILEMON VI 052000ZNOV17
++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

1) Patrol composition and Location

Our section was comprised of two vehicles. We moved through phase line yellow to high point 628 South-West of phase line red. We moved up to a ridge line and took contact which immobilised one of our vehicles, and resulted in a P4 casualty who was loaded into the vehicle in a bodybag. After repairing all four wheels we retreated to HLS Hendricks. One of our vehicles rolled over and was left in place at grid reference 07972541. After two P2 casualties were extracted and reinserted, we moved up on the ridgeline to the West of phase line red, bringing a resupply of a single Coyote vehicle to the platoon regroup. We detonated an enemy weapons cache, and then moved to the South-West of the platoon reorg to investigate an enemy position that was firing on friendly helicopters. Upon moving to the next ridge we took contact with an estimated fireteam strength enemy and suffered three P4 casualties. Our section is now awaiting reinsert from FOB Hermes.

2) Leaguer Status ;

One vehicle has remained at HLS Hendricks, the other is located with A/1 at the reorg location.

3) Ammunition and/or supplies expended;

We have used all of our spare wheels and approximately one magazine for each vehicle's 50. cal.

AFTER ACTION REPORT

TO: 1 SECTION 1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN

FROM: Pte Jakobsen, A/IC, 1 SECTION,1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN

SUBJECT: Operation PHILEMON V 052000ZNOV17 After Action Report

++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

Patrol composition:

6x Soldiers

2x Victors - Jackal HMG JK16AA, Coyote GMG 'Barbara'

Ammunition and supplies:

Coyote GMG 'Barbara', lost to RPG, GR 0771 2591. Destroyed with approx 120 40mm HE.

Jackal HMG JK16AA, lost to unknown factors GR 0773 2588, presumed picked up by friendly elements.

Location:

North perimeter of A/1 HLS, baseline facing north.

Debrief:

The section moved with 1PLT dir SE to set up on PL YELLOW in anticipation of attack up WESTERN RIDGE.

Discovered on position that clocks in Arma run slightly differently, both what they show (possibly occasional server sync) and how fast they move (sheer processing power of own CPU). Therefore advice elements to use real zulu in coordination of attacks.

After delays due to UKF IDF, 1 Section moved up EAST RIDGELINE near GR 083 259 to provide cover for 1/2. En elements attacked 1/2 from defilade, forcing 1 Section to use GMG for section IDF, and smaller calibers for suppressive fire. Effectiveness of fires were not ascertained. 1/2 and 1 Section did not communicate clearly where enemy was located and where fire should be landing. Later recce showed GMG fire on western ridge somewhat effective, direct fire not effective.

1 Section was engaged on its position by RPG from est GR 081 262 or north. Moved to defilade and continued to support 1/2.

0A called 1 Section for reinforcement after 1/2 suffered loss of Jackal near GR 079 259. 1 Section moved directly WEST to 080 260, and disembarked to clear area NORTH 1/2, presumed hostile. 1/2 had by that point retreated south. 1 Section at GR 0610 0799 took small arms fire from NORTHWEST, est GR 262 076 and south. 1 Section returned fire, deployed smoke, and brought GMG to bear on ridgeline.

In hindsight this location on western ridge had excellent eyes on NORTHWEST RIDGE that would later challenge 1 Section and 1PLT.

1PLT reformed on CCP at GR 080 258. 1 Section joined 1PLT and covered South. 1 Section and 1/3 (1 Jackal) given task to assault NORTHWEST RIDGE.

The assaulting formation was on its third bound when ambushed by enemy at bayonet range from left and right, GR 0771 2591. Elements withdrew SE under fire. Coyote of DELTA F/T 1 Section destroyed in the ambush.

1/3 and 1 Section reformed in draw approx 100 meters from ambush point. IC 1 Section gave less than stellar contact report. 1/3 and 1 Section organized vehicle smoke from 1/3 to cover casualty clearance. On arrival, all members of Delta F/T were assessed dead. 1/3 and 1 Section withdrew for the second time before the smoke cover thinned out.

At this point 1 Section was 3 strong and held in place in anticipation of enemy movement SE. 1/2 eventually moved around on right flank, and took contact near rock formations on W slope, GR 076 259. 1 Section now bounded NW to support 1/2. 1 Section arrived near 1/2 in time to hear enemy elements withdrawing into the riverbed. 1 Section was tasked to help 1/2 with casualties, but pressed on to hunt down enemy. Destroyed single en infantry who hid in rocks GR 0755 2596, and single en infantry in est GR 075 261. Reinforcements from Delta F/T made 1 Section complete again. 1 Section took defensive positions overwatching on East slope of ridgeline, watching West and North. 1 Section suffered 1x P2 casualty Rec Seymour, who was handed to Pte Dahl at CCP on that location. Section could not find Jackal from earlier contact. Presumed picked up by friendly elements to help with casualty clearance.

1 Section and 1/2 were now tasked to continue offensive movement along Northwest Ridge, 1 left, 2 right. 1 Section had moved no further than est GR 074 262 when 1/3 had contact on CCP direction North and West. 1/2 moved to reinforce. 1 Section was tasked with moving South to assist. IC informed 0A this was difficult because of obscuring smoke and nearby friendly elements. In hindsight should have been communicated much more clearly. From 1 Section's perspective, elements of 1PLT flanked the enemy from each their side (3 and 9); to add 1 Section to the 12 o'clock of this was perilous. 1 Section spotted and was engaged by enemy sniper, and suffered 1x P4 casualty Rec Gustaffsson. 1 Section identifed enemy weapons crate on location prev grid, which was BIP.

After 1PLT contact near CCP had ended, 1 Section was tasked to return to CCP. 1 Section formed baseline and watched north, est GR 0765 2619.

Some cracking reports there and bang on time.

Clearly a lesson here about not ‘liberating’ friendly vehicles found in the field unless the owners are confirmed KIA or you have cleared the movement with them directly....

Good to see we have stopped the wasteful practice of BIP for disabled vehicles - just get the repair teams out to tip them upright and you are golden.

1/2 PATROL REPORT 05/11/2017

OP PHILLIMON VI

Composition:

2x Jackels and 8xpacs

.50 cal Jackel (JK 15 AA)

.50 cal Jackel (JK 16 AA)

We began the night by moving to PL YELLOW. There was a significant delay on PL YELLOW whilst reinserts were brought in.

After this we took the lead of the formations assault onto the far side of the valley. After some initial success we came into a heavy contact with enemy forces located along a small ridge to our front, dug in around a rock feature grid . Unable to proceed we requested IDF onto the rock. Despite being told IDF was inbound, this never materialised. After some time waiting for IDF and learning that it was not inbound we cautiously made our way up to the rock feature. On position were 4 enemy pacs and a soviet-era reciolless rifle. Soon after, my delta vehicle took a direct RPG hit from a unseen position. Due to this I withdrew my charlie vehicle to safety. Back in over watch of the aforementioned rock feature we took a number of contacts from it again. With the help of 1/3 we continued to hold off enemy forces until ordered to withdraw to the A/1 CCP to regroup friendly elements.

From here we were ordered into an over watch position to the East in order to support 1/1 and 1/3's push north west. Almost as soon as the attack had begun 1/1 and 1/3 had taken significant casualties and we were ordered to mount a foot assault onto the rock feature that had given us so much grief that evening. This attack proved somewhat successful with us driving enemy combatants from the rock feature. This allowed us to continue to move to the north west which we did on foot. After moving approximately 100m we took fire from three directions killing 1/0A and giving us 1xP1, 1xP2 and 1xP4. In this contact we killed two enemy combatants and were barley able to maintain the security of our casualties whilst reinforcements were brought in. The platoon now moved up to this position and we set up an ARD to deal with the casualties.

After some time another advance was ordered. 1/1 and myself were to push along the west of the ridge. Almost as soon as this movement had begun 1/3 took a heavy contact to our west and we were ordered to provide support. Enemy forces were located on the far side of yet another small valley feature. 1/0A ordered us to move across the valley and assault enemy forces. Here we took 2 more casualties but only 4 strong were able to assault and destroy the enemy forces harassing 1/3. Here we took a prisoner who was evacuated to FOB HERMES.  From here we set up in the platoon ARD grid 0765 2619 with minimal medical and ammunition supplies.

Supplies: Amber on ammo.

After Action Report

From: Pte Griffin, 1 SEC 2 PLT A Coy 2 PARA BN

Subject: Operation Philemon VI 052000ZNOV17

++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

Upon breaking down our leaguer and performing the proper vehicle and equipment checks, 1 Sec moved off to our first designated holding position at Grid:09022699, using the terrain to conceal our approach as much as possible.

After the initial bombardment of enemy locations, 1 Sec advanced further toward the valley to provide cover for the assault from 1 Plt. We located an adequate position at Grid: 085267 that provided cover, a view of the northern end of the valley, a view of the opposite ridge and also enabled us to watch our rear.

Approximately 10 minutes passed before we became aware that 1 Plt were in contact. From our location we were not able to provide meaningful support so we advanced further toward the eastern ridge line in order to get eyes on any potential enemy threats. We held on and near high point 631 in a baseline facing west, giving both fireteams an unrestricted view of the opposing ridge line.

As 1 Plt pursued their advance along the ridge line I received a sighting report from my Delta vehicle of enemy on the western ridge line. Upon review, the enemy would have been located on or around the pre-sighted UJ1004 mark. Concerned that I did not have a clear picture of the location of friendly elements I held fire until receiving clearance from 20A. However, my delay caused us to lose sight of the enemy.

Not much later, my Delta fireteam began receiving accurate sniper fire from an unseen position on or around the UJ1002 mark sustaining 2 X T2 casualties. 1 Sec pulled the vehicles back off the ridge line enough to be in a covered position but also allowing the HMG's to stay on the target. A combination of fires from friendly elements and 1 Sec's dismounted marksman either killed or deterred the enemy shooter. I sent the casualties back to HLS Baileys for extraction.

Confident the enemy sniper was no longer a threat I pushed our Charlie vehicle back to a more dominant position where we soon witnessed a seemingly close quarter battle between members of 1 Plt and at least a fireteam strength enemy element at approximate Grid: 08032634. With a combination of HMG and marksman fire 1 Sec managed to kill 1 enemy with a possible 2-3 more that we were unable to confirm.

1 Sec's Delta vehicle returned with re-inserts and we were then tasked to move to 2/1 Op mark at Grid: 07992683. Not more than 10 seconds after reaching the position we took danger close contact from around a large rock formation. Using smoke and manoeuvring the vehicles we brought our weapons to bear and destroyed the enemy. No casualties were taken in the ambush. Initially believing the ambush had originated from the entrance to a cave complex, a clear and search revealed we had stumbled upon an enemy cache that was then marked for a controlled detonation.

1 Sec returned to position in order to support 1 Plt's assault but were unable to be effective due to only fleeting glimpses of enemy or enemy being beyond our lines of sight.

As the operation was drawing to a close, 1 Sec moved to the 2 Plt leaguer where a vehicle was overturned due to terrain.

AFTER ACTION REPORT

FROM: COUPE, CPL, 3 SEC 1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN
SUBJECT: Operation PHILEMON VII 082000ZNOV17
++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

1) Patrol composition and Location

Our section was comprised of two vehicles, a HMG Jackal and a GMG Coyote. We followed the platoon out of the leaguer under enemy IDF fire and set up on a ridgeline to provide suppressive GMG fire. Our coyote vehicle was destroyed by enemy IDF fire and resulted in three P4 casualties. Once we were reinserted, we took a jackal vehicle and set up by the cave location. We then took a P2 casualty. An explosion occurred in the cave and the platoon equipped CBRN gear, but it did not appear any chemical agents were present. We breached into the cave and found several enemy bodies and various arms and ammunition, as well as a rigged explosive trap. A number of trucks and vehicles were seen moving away from the cave to the West, one truck then exploded around 600-800m range, releasing a suspicious cloud of gas. We then set up explosive charges in the cave and left via helicopter to act as QRF to investigate an archaeological dig site. After detonating the charges, the helicopter moved to the South, where we moved to perform a recce on the dig site. We began taking sniper fire and witnessed civilians also taking sniper fire. One civilian and one injured civilian joined our section, and we killed a few enemy snipers.

We were then attacked by an enemy vehicle QRF, consisting of several armed technicals and a few larger armed trucks. We killed the drivers and gunners of approximately 3-5 vehicles, before moving away to the North to set up an ARD and await reinforcement from the company.

2) Leaguer Status ;

Our section is located nearby to HLS Indy in ARD.

3) Ammunition and/or supplies expended;

One coyote was destroyed, minimal rounds fired from other vehicles.

++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

Composition:

1x Jackal, .50 Cal;

4x Pax.

From 1Plt leaguer we commenced our movement covering southern flank of 1Plt. Upon reaching position in GRID 073 254 we sustained direct fire from 1x ZSU-23 (Approx. GRID 069 254) and various small arms and anti-tank missile fire. During the engagement we took out 1x ZSU-23 and withdrew without suffering any casualties and damage to the Vehicle.

After that we were moving between 4 positions: 1) 073 253 (HP 631 #1); 2) 070 252 (HP 621); 3) 066 252 (HP 631 #2); 4) 062 249 (HP 631 #3).

During stay at HP 621 we sighted a suspicious yellow smoke deployed west of 1Plt CCP, we deployed CBRN gear and reported forward the suspicious smoke.

During stay at HP 631 #2 we sighted 1x truck moving away from the AO, engaged with Javelin missile and the target was destroyed. Upon explosion we sighted that it was giving a suspicious smoke, indicating possibility carrying chemical weapons.

During stay at HP 631 #1 we sighted 1x Pax wearing a white robe heading away from the AO towards NW, unknown if was armed.

During stay at HP 631 #3 1x AN-2 flying above us, on the second pass we were firing warning shots in front of it. It turned around for another circle, putting more warning shots.

Eventually it landed in GRID 0696 2547. 1x Pilot was present and unharmed, though irriated due to "his plane being shot down." After checking on him, was given info that an archealogical team was under attack at GRID Square 05 14.

Pilot was detained and extracted from HLS London together with 1x P3 casualty.

Afterwards participated in 1Plt movement towards GRID Square 05 14. En route of unknown reason vehicle imploded and caused: 1x P4, 2x P1.

Remainder of MSP leaguered at GRID: 0865 0197.

AFTER ACTION REPORT
TO: 1 SECTION 1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN
FROM: Pte Jakobsen, A/2IC, 1 SECTION,1 PLTN A COY 2 PARA BN

SUBJECT: Operation PHILEMON IX 162000ZNOV17 After Action Report
++++++++++++++BEGINS++++++++++++++++

1) Patrol composition and location
Vehicles JK12 (Jackal HMG) and CTII (Coyote HMG), respectively Charlie (Ptes Kalinsky, Johnsen, Griffin, Cpl Macdonald 1IC) and Delta (Ptes Stünkel, Noergaard, Jakobsen 2IC, Rec Gustaffson).

AAR:
1 Section moved out with victors JK12 (Jackal HMG) and CT II (Coyote HMG) in coordinated movement with 1/2 to arrive at ridge GR 052 149, Phase Line Yellow, to get eyes on ridgeline of Phase Line Red.

Plan called for 1/3 to move through 1 Section pos onto Phase Line Red (north), and 1 Section to move onto Phase Line Red (middle/south). After 1/3 had moved through, 1/1 took enemy IDF, 2x impact on position. Section expedited movement South to avoid IDF, arriving at GR 047 147. Pushed West onto ridgeline and held pos while 1/2 secured archeological site. Remained in place while 1/3 was engaged on right flank. After 1/2 completed objective, 1 Section moved back to HLS Thunder vicinity GR 055 147.

Platoon plan called for south and west movement to gain overview on suspect OPFOR held airfield. 1 Section and 1/2 bounded to neighbouring height points in GR 13 06, where would provide overwatch for 1 Platoon. After 1/3 and 1 Plt Tac moved through, 1 Section and 1/2 bounded to neighbouring height points in vic GR 057 122. 1 Section nearly got into contact during this movement, as did 1/2.

Intent was now for 1 Section and 1/2 to move towards airfield in support of Platoon. Est 200m after initial movement, 1 Section came upon 1x civilian male trying to make contact, est GR 04 11. Conversation and examination determined he needed treatment for heat exhaustion. Civilian was doused in water and taken into the shade north of HLS SAINT, GR 047 124, where 1 Section has leaguered up.

2) Leaguer status
Leaguered up GR 047 124.

3) Ammunition and/or supplies expended;
10x water bottles consumed, 2x handed off to civilian.

4) Intelligence
Civilian taken into custody disclosed that there were 'bad men' to the west, operating out of an airfield, and passed out. Man carried bananas and a cell phone. Man's cell phone was retrieved to examine for possible ties to remote controlled devices, contact list information for smugglers, etc, and handed over to Plt Tac.

Section could improve on: 5-20s, esp for hillpoints and narrow terrain.
