OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

Recommended Posts

The financial crisis hit the Greek economy hard. Greek GDP per capita is currently at the same level it was in 2003. It has fallen by almost a half since its peak in 2008.

It is in this context that, this year, an agreement was finally reached between the Greek Prime Minister and his Macedonian counterpart over the country name for the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia: it is now scheduled to be known as the Republic of North Macedonia. This is a historic moment, paving the way for FYROM to enter the EU and joining NATO. The agreement has been ratified by both governments, but there is still strong opposition in both countries over the issue: many Macedonians do not believe it goes far enough, and some Greeks consider it to be a national humilation.

It is probable that countries with anti-NATO sentiment would work to covertly support that opposition through financing, protests and organised armed dissent, a pattern which has been seen in other Balkan states.

24 hours ago, the Greek government formally informed its NATO allies that it had lost control of the small island of AGIOS EFSTRATIOS. It is believed that elements of the HELLENIC ARMED FORCES are attempting to launch a coup d'état from the island, but information is limited. From the suddenness, foreign involvement is suspected.

In this light, the 16AA has been mobilised to re-establish contact with any remaining friendly HELLENIC forces, KILL OR CAPTURE any coup plotters, find any evidence of foreign involvement, and re-establish control over the island.

Formal orders will follow shortly. Stand to!

After our first operation on AGIOS EFSTRATIOS, J2 has continued to gather intelligence. The location and allegiance of the HELLENIC ARMED FORCES and civilians based on the island and the origin of the forces that we came into contact with is not yet clear.

From the casualties that we sustained, it is believed that the forces on this island have received a level of military training. The ROE has been adjusted accordingly. J2's investigations will continue alongside our operations.

Developments on Altis consist of a buffer zone of approximately 500 metres between Altis goverment checkpoints and the checkpoints of the forces occupying the south of the island. No recorded shots have been fired across the buffer zone.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO members signed an accord with Macedonia on Wednesday allowing the tiny ex-Yugoslav republic to become the 30th member of the U.S.-led alliance after a deal with Greece ended a 27-year-old dispute over its name.

At a formal signing of the NATO accession protocol, which must now be ratified by allied governments, Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov hailed the moment as showing that the country “will never walk alone” once in the alliance.

“We stand beside these 29 allies... able and ready to assume the obligations arising from our full membership in NATO,” Dimitrov told a news conference after NATO ambassadors signed the protocol.

The ratification process typically takes about a year, and the United States has said it expects Macedonia - now known officially as North Macedonia under the terms of its name deal with Greece - to formally join the alliance in 2020.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the admittance of a new member highlighted that all European nations who met the entrance criteria could join the regional alliance, a position Moscow rejects.

“It shows that NATO’s door remains open for countries that meet NATO standards and that adhere to the NATO values of democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty,” Stoltenberg said.

Russia says that by taking in Balkan members, the alliance is undermining security in the region.

As we have seen in the first operations, the enemy have been using standard Eastern Bloc weaponry and uniforms, with a possible connection to Russia.

The quality of weaponry seen in use by the enemy shows that they have the funding and logistics of a small regular military: we have seen standard Eastern Bloc assault weapons in the form of AK-type weapons, PKMs and related weapon systems, and heavy weaponry in the form of a technical equipped with an HMG. We have also discovered a high level radar system accompanied by an anti-air system. The radar and anti-air emplacements were previously installed and operated by the HELLENIC ARMED FORCES.

The uniforms in use by the enemy is also of note. It was previously determined that these were of Eastern Bloc origin with possible connections to Russia. However, no Russian units have been seen or recorded as using these types of uniforms or camo structures in the past 3 decades.

The town of Girni was unfortunately the site of a mass grave. There are a number of possibilities behind this mass grave. However, we do not wish to speculate on events and will continue investigations. We currently do not have any communications with Air Station Mike-26, Camp Rogain or Airbase Stratis. All are being considered hostile. We have also had no contact or communication with any of the HELLENIC ARMED FORCES that were based on the island. Their allegiance and state is still unknown.

Due to the lack of advanced body armour, mechanised or air support, the enemy is not believed to be from a conventional army. Our current assessment is that they may be a private military company, or some loose coalition of mercenaries. A major objective is to determine their ultimate employer.

After our 3rd operation, J2 has updated its intelligence.

J2 once again found that the level of weapons, uniforms, and formations used are consistent with the previous forces encountered, however, the strategies of the enemy are becoming more aggressive. Our current available assets may be changed in order to effectively confront the developing situation.

After capturing air station Mike-26, J2 assessed a number of shoulder-fired short range anti-air launchers and a fallen individual that appeared to be in high ranking uniform. A dogtag was present on the body. However, we have been unable to determine the origin of this individual, there were no obvious markings of rank or affiliations on his uniform, a pistol holster was found on the body but lacked any firearm or signs of usage, a map was also located nearby with orders to stronghold the facility. The real identity or role of this individual is currently unknown.

After the engagement to retake Camp Tempest, a large number of enemy were found within the base along with at least 3 sections worth of fallen infantry on the nearby hill. Among them were two officers, one of whom had a map detailing supply routes from the airbase and nearby port to air station Mike-26. The legitimacy of this intel is unknown.

The Hellenic forces stationed on the island have still not been located and their status and allegiance remain unknown. Due to the size of the Hellenic forces based on the island, J2 predict that they are either defending the airbase and nearby port or the firing range at Kamino as no other facility on the island is large enough to support their presence.

Unfortunately, a number of vessels were able to dock in territory under enemy control using the cover of darkness. These vessels are of unknown origin but are believed to have carried supplies and possible reinforcements.

NATO/OTAN, along with the British and Greek government, has condemned the actions of the hostile forces on the island for their actions against the civilian population. The UN and multiple human rights organizations have called for investigations into possible war crimes once the conflict has concluded.

Developments on Altis

A full inventory count by the Hellenic forces is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. This will give us a much clearer picture of the resistance in the southern half of the island.

An unnamed political leader and the deputy commander for the 88th Military Command were assassinated in Kavala, which lead to a 3-hour standoff with the 2 alleged perpetrators. Both individuals were killed by members of the 290th Mechanized Infantry Battalion after they breached the compound. No group has taken responsibility for the assassination. An explosive device detonated outside of Athira disabled two vehicles and damaged a third. The vehicles were travelling in convoy on an unknown route. A number of soliders are reported to be injured, but information is scarce.

Flights to and from Telos airport are expected to be suspended within the week.

A number of large explosions were heard in rebel-held territory. The origin is suspected to be in the hills south of Pyrgos.

After our 4th operation, J2 has updated its intelligence.

J2 once again found that the level of uniforms and formations used are consistent with the previous forces encountered, however, there has been an increase in the number of heavy weapons and shoulder-fired munitions used. The enemy, unfortunately, managed to land a number of vessels at Kamino firing range. It is believed that these resources and reinforcements would have been sent to defend Camp Rogain and Airbase Stratis.

With the defeat of these reinforcements and the capture of these resources, J2 predicts that the enemy will be firmly in a defensive posture and on the back foot with very limited abilities to make any offensives on any fronts.

The state and allegiance and location of the Hellenic forces stationed on the island are still to be determined. In the past 24 hours, the cloud cover has thinned over the island which has enabled limited satellite surveillance. J2 can confirm that large amounts of foot and vehicular traffic has been detected between Airbase Stratis and the nearby town of Agios Efstratios. J2 now believes that these are the only remaining positions that could handle the size and logistical needs of the Hellenic forces based on the island.

The Deceased officer found at Air station Mike-26 has been identified as Doku Gelayev despite his dog tags bearing a different name. Doku Gelayev was a Chechen born in 1974. He fought in the first Chechen war before moving to Albania in 1997 when the Chechen Republic adopted Sharia law. In mid-1998 he moved to Kosovo to fight with the KLA as a platoon commander. In 1999 he was recruited by a PMC based out of Africa. He was believed to have been killed in the Sierra Leone Civil War in 2001.

From this information, J2 now firmly believes we are fighting PMC forces based out of Africa. Investigations will continue to determine their ultimate employer.

After our assault onto Camp Rogain J2 Continued their investigations.

Due to the number of casualties sustained during the previous operation J2 is now advising a less aggressive combat style, they also suspect that the enemy will try the maneuvers and tactics used again as they have proven extremely effective against us. J2 predicts the enemies morale will have improved after the mass casualty event that occurred.

After the enemies use of Fixed wing and Rotary aircraft, J2 is considering the use of additional assets to assist us in the final stages of this operation.

The enemy appears to be using a the Scorched earth strategy, as such there was little to no information within or around Camp Rogain. J2 suspects that the battles for AGIOS EFSTRATIOS and Airbase Stratis will be extremely challenging. If any Hellenic forces remain on the island, these two locations are certainly their base of operations. J2 has seen no evidence that the Hellenic forces based on the island are opposed to the forces occupying as such they suspect the Hellenic forces are using the pmc groups to occupy locations that have less military or strategic value.

With the cloud cover of the island continuing to thin, J2 has continued its satellite surveillance, They have detected a number of vessels approximately 50NM south the island. It is unknown if these vessels intend to support the enemy forces or are simply passing vessels, however they are currently not responding to any communication attempts.

J2 and BN HQ are considering multiple options to decrease the difficulty, civilian casualties and collateral damage during the assaults on AGIOS EFSTRATIOS and Airbase Stratis.

Developments on Altis:

The area between the two makeshift borders has now become a dead zone with no civilian or military presence resulting in a noticeable split of the country.

Power from the Telos Solar array has been cut to the south of the island, this resulted in around 3 days of total power loss however the power to the south of the island has now been restored from an unknown source.

A group of Hellenic special forces attempted to land under the cover of dark to the South West of Pyrgos with the intent to set up surveillance on the nearby mountain range. All communication was lost with them around an hour after landing.

A number of civilian boats set off from a beach west of Charkia and landed near Neochori a few hours later. They were rounded up by Hellenic forces and taken to a holding facility. The civilian’s ID'ed a number of high ranking military personnel, this has confirmed the theory behind the Coup d'état being driven by military personnel of Altis birth.

It has been confirmed that a number of military personnel are being held in a camp north of Paros, they are believed to be those who resisted the coup while stationed in the south of the island.

All military and surveillance operations are being temporarily halted as a storm approaches the island.
