II. SITUATION

After the Russian attack on northern Europe, local forces diverted the attacking force towards the east. While the initial defensive operations were successful, parts of the Russian forces managed to break through the lines in Finland.

As Finnish and Norwegian forces continue to fight the Russians to the north, Swedish and UK forces make an effort to stop the Russian advance on VT7, around Oulu, in order to deny them a supply route to the frontlines.

Local forces will provide air-, artillery and logistical support.

After 1 Plt and 2 Plt conducted defensive operations, A Coy will make the main effort to stop the enemy advance in VIROJOKI.

i. GROUND

In General: OULU is a coastal town surrounded by forrests and coastline. The VT7 main road goes through the town which is divided by a large river. We are facing dramatic weather changes with strong winds and temperatures around 0 degrees. The terrain mostly consists of dense forests, road networks and rough coastlines. To our advantage the river limits the enemy avenue of approach and sets us up with a coordinated line of defense.

In Detail: We will conduct defensive operations along the canal in VIROJOKI. Swedish air force squadrons will fly sorties against identified enemy forces and keep the air clear of enemy aircraft.

ii. ENEMY FORCES

Known & Suspected En. Positions: The Russians are attacking from the north and will be forced to use the river crossings in order to continue south. They will be channeled during their crossing.
Strength: Assessed as approximately 2 Marine Infantry Battalions strength although an unknown number of support units are to be expected.
Morale: High.
Weaponry: Modern Russian equipment, including equipment from the RATNIK program: AK-12s, PKPs, Modernized RPKs, etc. Caliber up to 12.5mm.
IDF: 60mm mortars.
Vehicles: The Russians have a large amount of BTR90s, BRDMs, BMPs, and other armored and light vehicles.
Aircraft: Russian rotary air units support their forces on the ground.
Mine/IED Threat: LOW.

Phase 3

Once the enemy advance is broken 1 Plt will support a counter attack by local forces.

Guidelines

We cannot let enemy forces gain a foothold on our river bank, communication is key and any broken position in our lines must immediately be reinforced. This is the enemy's main effort and we can expect all of their supporting arms to be in this fight, prepare your defensive positions so that you can withstand indirect fire as well as direct fire from all levels.
